HE-1 / AE-1  Ambulance

Throughout World War 11 Piper made several modifications to the basic structure of the J-5 as military versions.

The later J-5C was built as the HE-1 Ambulance (later AE-1) for the US Navy with a rear hinged fuselage decking for stretcher access, a fully cowled 100hp Lycoming O-235-C engine with electrical system and a redesigned landing gear. 100 examples built.
